The Domestic Violence Program at The Freedom Center has been certified by San Mateo County Probation and meets the sentencing requirements for court-adjudicated batterers. Referrals are accepted from the courts and Child Protective Services. The Freedom Center staff maintains frequent contact with the participant's referral source. Self referrals are also welcome.
The Domestic Violence Program is a one-year program. Participants must attend one 2-hour group per week for 52 weeks. Separate groups are scheduled for male and female batterers.
The program educates men and women on the difference between abusive relationships based on power and control, and nonviolent relationships based on equality. The program teaches participants that they are responsible for their behavior and that violence is not an option because it violates the rights of their partner and jeopardizes the success of the relationship. Discussion and exercises teach participants to identify and manage their stress and anger.
The Freedom Center provides additional services that the courts may require of participants, such as alcohol or drug abuse treatment or parenting.
The domestic violence programs follows the George Anderson text , “A Ray of Hope.”
