The domestic violence groups at El Centro de Libertad educate men and women adjudicated for spousal or partner abuse on the difference between abusive relationships based on power and control, and nonviolent relationships based on equality. The program teaches participants that they are responsible for their behavior and that violence is not an option because it violates the rights of their partner and jeopardizes the success of the relationship. Discussion and exercises teach participants to identify and manage their stress and anger.
This is a one-year program. Participants must attend one 2-hour group per week for 52 weeks. Separate groups are scheduled for male and female batterers.
The program at El Centro has been certified by San Mateo County Probation and meets the sentencing requirements for court-adjudicated batterers.El Centro staff maintains frequent contact with the participant's probation officer.
Although alcohol or drug use is present in over half of all family violence incidents, family violence and substance abuse are two different problems. The courts may also require participants to attend a substance abuse recovery program.
The domestic violence programs follows the George Anderson text , A Ray of Hope.
